Janice! Am not so slow anymore! wahahahaha

My laptop has been booting real slow these past few days and Janice was suggesting that I upgrade my unit. I was considering it but I just use my laptop to post process pics (if I remember to make time) or to surf hehehe I'm still happy with it (even if I haven't fix my sound card yet) and the only thing that irked me is that it takes almost 2 minutes to boot. =)
Searching for the answers online... I stumbled on bootchart... sorry I forgot to bookmark the site where I chanced upon it. Anyway... it's easy to install... just apt-get install bootchart

It makes a pretty picture where we can check boot sequence and how long it took for each application.... so based on this pretty picture... (I cropped most of it... sorry) Usplash was taking a loooooooong time.So after I removed Usplash which is just a boot up beautifier by suppressing the lines of logs usually filling the screen.... my boot time was significantly shorter. Yey!

Hello Gimp!

Been using gimp for a few months now and it really irks me that gimp does not have the action capabilities of photoshop.... well I was wrong. It does have that action capability... BUT you have to write the script for it. No shortcut like in either photoshop or firewords where you just save from history. Eniways.... heres a script that will place "photographed by h20water" at the bottom right corner of images. ^_^ Save the code as some_filename.scm and drop it into gimp's scripts folder.

; An example script that writes a fixed string in the current
; image.
(define (script-fu-stamp-h20water img drawable)

(define text-float)

(let* (
(y_start (- (car(gimp-drawable-height drawable)) 11) )
(x_start (- (car(gimp-drawable-width drawable)) 120) )
(img_h (car(gimp-drawable-height drawable)) )
(img_w (car(gimp-drawable-width drawable)) )
(watermark (car (gimp-layer-new img
img_w img_h 0
"Watermarked" 100 0)))
)

;work with "watermarked" layer
(gimp-layer-add-alpha watermark)
(gimp-drawable-fill watermark 3)
(gimp-image-add-layer img watermark -1)

;set to b & w
(gimp-context-set-default-colors)

; Create the text. See the Procedure Browser for parameters of gimp-text.
(set! text-float (car (gimp-text-fontname img watermark
x_start y_start "photographed by h20water" 0 1 8 0
"Sans")))

; Anchor the selection
(gimp-floating-sel-anchor text-float)
)

; Flush output
(gimp-displays-flush)

)

(script-fu-register "script-fu-stamp-h20water"
"stamp h20water"
"stamp photographed by h20water in the current image"
"H20water "
"H20water"
"2008-03-07"
"RGB*, GRAY*"
SF-IMAGE "Input Image" 0
SF-DRAWABLE "Input Drawable" 0)

Kitchen Updates + EP!!!!

March 2 marks the end of Janice's lease to her Tampines flat and I had to say goodbye to her kitchen, the one that I have become accustomed to using. Before we left, I was able to try making fried rice with ham and egg. It was edible but I kinda left out the salt so it was salt or pepper to taste. hehehe They said it was fine and to make it again... I did not eat it though because it would surely jack up my bad cholesterol level. hahaha Janice likes fried rice so I'll probably make this once in a while... at least I know what stuff I put in there. ^_^

We moved to our new place last weekend and I finally got the chance to cook in our "new" kitchen. I tried cooking shrimp with fried oatmeal... and Janice is currently sitting beside me finishing it off. hehehe yummy! I like the "old" kitchen but the "new" one I like better... will be posting pics soon.

Aside from moving and trying out new recipes, we joined the Hope church sports fest (will post pics soon) and I finally got my employment pass!!! Yehey!!! Now I need to find time (or inclination) to visit the embassy and poea. hehehe

Yahoo!

I started work yesterday... so far orientation mode pa ako sa office. Met more new pinoy friends too. ^_^ Nakakatuwa, nilalapitan nila ako to welcome me. ^_^

Printer Adventures ::
------------------------------------------------------------

Tama diba? well... ^_^
Guess what... yung scanner... at yung high tech printer ay iisa. Buti nalang yung napagtanungan ko ngayon ay naintindihan ako... tinuruan ako pano magscan to email. ^_^ Aliw!

Day 1 lesson learned: mababait at matutulungin new officemates ko kahit na di kami nagkakaintindihan minsan.

Day 2: parang nag growl saken ang printer nung dumaan ako. wahahahaha

Day 2 lesson learned: kahit mas malaki pa sa akin ang printer... di niya ako makakain.

Kitchen Updates

This is Janice's kitchen. This is where I have been learning to cook. ^_^ Usually I mess up the area but I try to clean it ASAP. hehehe The picture does not show it but the kitchen area is quite roomy... the counter you see on the picture is just half and it occupies just a third of the kitchen area. ^_^ It's well equipped to cover my basic cooking needs and there are lots and lots of cupboard spaces.

So far... I have successfully added the following recipes to my can do list. ^_^

Bistek

Crabstick Salad -- does making a salad count as cooking?

Soy Chicken(like this a lot!)

Kailan with Pineapple -- Kailan is a local vege that Janice likes. ^_^

Vege Adventure II

Our friend Barbs (vegetarian and with enviable skill with the kitchen knife) is staying with Janice also. Left to our own devices, we usually eat out but since I'm on a cooking roll... I decided to try cooking lunch for us both. ^_^ Barbs suggested going through kitchenomics recipes since these were what she used at home. We found a bunch of vegetarian dishes, mostly tofu based (sawa na), and we settled on trying PIÑA KANGKONG since we both like pineapple and kangkong.

So we went to the same supermarket I visited yesterday and tried matching the ingredients to our list. This time, our problem was the Kangkong... I have no idea what it looked liked uncooked. Barbs knows but none of the leafy veges there seem to match. Anyway, she asked another lady shopper and the later was kind enough to point out the Kangkong. hehehe According to Barbs it looks different... it was longer and with thinner leaves. I dunno if we really got the right vegetable since the helpful lady did not seem to speak english and just pointed to a leafy stack and said "Singapore Kangkong"

Anyway, next time I go back there... I'm sure I will recognized that leafy vege again and I will surely hunt for it again since the recipe turned out quite easy to prepare and tasty. ^_^

Hooray It Was Edible!

Yesterday Janice called to say a group of friends were stopping by her place around dinner time and if I could come up with something for dinner. ^_^ Glad to have new victims/visitors to test my concoctions on I excitedly googled my way to a couple of recipes I would like to try. hehehe chicken afritada and beef sinigang(I found some tamarind powder in the cupboard)... both of which I have never tried cooking. After making a list of ingredients, I head out to the nearest market and had fun matching my list to the actual products found there. For example, I know what cabbage is supposed to look like in the Philippines but I have no idea what it'll will look like in SG.... veges kinda look the same to me and the Chinese labels does not help at all. There were lot of cabbage look alikes in the store! Anyway, I settled for the cutest ones. wahahaha I forgot to take pictures.... next time for sure.

I had my laptop on the kitchen table... and I followed the instructions step by step. Hmmmm.... they really should put in the little details like how would I know if the stuff/veges is cooked. hehehe Took me about 2.5 hours to get the food done... our visitors were here already and Janice thought I had everything prepared by the time she got home (7:30 pm). We got to eat by 8:30 pm... fortunately the food was edible. Hehehe the chicken afritada was just right (even if it seemed I dumped more red bell pepper on it than chicken) and the beef stew was ok but lacked a bit of salt and most of the veges mushy. Wahahaha

Last I heard... no one got sick from my cooking last night. ^_^

To Cook or To Nuke?

It's so quiet! hehehe I'm in SG right now... staying with Janice... messing up her space... eating her food... utilizing her internet... in short... being her personal pest/pet. hahaha

We went to the supermarket last night... and I can't help comparing prices. The fruits are definitely cheaper and the rest are somewhat the same price as in Manila... so if you know how to cook... you'll get to save a lot. ^_^ hehehe I will probably suffer from indigestion for quite sometime while I learn how to cook. hahaha

I need to prepare food for lunch and I want to try Jan's stove but it looks so complicated so I'll probably just stick to the microwave.
...
hmmmm
...
I'm gonna try making chicken adobo. hehehehe

Challenges?!

Surprise! Surprise! I met an old friend today and we haven't had the chance to catch up for quite some time now. She's been on a long hiatus from our frequent conversations over fried food or coffee. As it is, she's also planning on moving to another country and her papers are in the process of being “prepared” while mine is lying somewhere in my still unpacked boxes. hehehe As old friends does, we skipped the chitchat and dove to the juicy updates of our “love” lives. My laments on my non-existing love life took a couple of minutes then she launched into her much colorful story. ^_^ She met a guy and knowing her penchant for weird men I sat back to ready to make my symphatetic grunts and/or to stiffle my giggles. hehehe Anyway, the actuall telling took a considerable amount of time, she got hooked on an older man with a son from a previous relationship that has a charming face and a distinct personality. =) Charming face and distinct personality being my way of saying it politically correct. hehehe I'm not into looks myself but I had to smile and ask her what she found appealing about this guy. Her answer... he presented a challenge more than anything else. ^_^ For 2008, I wish us both less challenges on that aspect of our lives. hahaha

Happy New Year!

Going Open Source

Hooray!!!! I finally switched to Ubuntu (Thanks Ryan & Hector!)... and this is my first post after finally figuring out how to connect online. hahahaha Melv's... thanks for saving me further nose bleeds on trying to get my wifi up and running. hehehe you were absolutely right. WIRED is the answer. hahaha Now I could google my way to complete my setup. ^_^

Bio lab

Hahaha this was from almost 10 years ago.

For the record... after 10 years... I still don't dig this subject. Memorize memorize memorize memorize the book.... and when you try to ask questions not found in the book... you get stared down by the teacher. hahahahaha My workbook was always empty... except for the drawing parts. hehehe I passed the subject because I had a reliable SHORT term memory back then. Hmmmm.... I probably used up my quota of short term memory allocation on these types of subjects.

Usefulness of this subject to me for the past 10 years .... 0%
Sana they take this out of the curriculum... waste of time and tax payers money.

The picture above was from an impromptu photo shoot with Camille in her unit which is across from mine. ^_^ December promises to be as stressful as the previous month… I have to pack my mini jungle of a room. Yikes.
